16 The Moment: A Modernist Residential Revival in Mashhad

Residential Architecture Melding Tradition with Modern Family Living

Exploring the unique architectural design of 16 The Moment, a residential project by Hosein Ebrahimzade that reimagines the modernist Tehran apartments for contemporary family life in Mashhad, Iran.

16 The Moment stands as a testament to the innovative approach to residential design, taking cues from the "Khorjini" pattern of Tehran's modernist era. Hosein Ebrahimzade and his team have crafted an "apartment republic" that caters to a family's evolving needs while paying homage to the architectural heritage of the 1950s and 60s. The project's strength lies in its ability to reconcile diverse client preferences within a cohesive design framework. It comprises a 300-square-meter unit for the parents, four 150-square-meter units for their children, and additional space granted by the construction license for a 510-square-meter land.

Designing for a multi-generational family posed unique challenges, particularly in ensuring privacy and connectivity. The team adeptly handled the separation of two-unit floors and the integration of a common elevator space, without compromising the individuality of each floor. This careful planning resulted in a variety of floor plans, fostering interaction among family members while maintaining their independence.

The realization of 16 The Moment was grounded in traditional construction methods, with no role for industrialization or prefabrication. However, the design team's dedication extended beyond architecture, as they custom-designed and fabricated specific objects, such as benches and a fireplace, to enhance the project's bespoke quality. The technical specifications reveal a gross built area of 2650 square meters, thoughtfully distributed across the site.

The project's interaction design ensures that despite the various level differences, family members can maintain a sense of community. This is a direct result of the extensive research into residential architecture from the mid-20th century, which informed the project's design principles. The architect's familiarity with the urban infrastructure and municipal regulations of the area played a pivotal role in navigating the challenges, particularly in negotiating floor space ratio regulations.

16 The Moment is not only a residential space but also a creative solution that emerged from a unique client request. The project's success is marked by its recognition with the Iron A' Design Award in 2024, celebrating its practicality, innovation, and integration of industry best practices. The award acknowledges the project's contribution to enhancing living standards and fostering a sense of well-being, ultimately aiming for a better world. The visual narrative of this architectural feat is captured by Deed Studio, with video documentation by Hamze Ebrahimzade, ensuring the project's design excellence is preserved and shared.
